James: Faith that Works (Week 2)

Words, Words, Words

Preview Question:
Think about a specific situation in which you did not truly listen to someone else about an important topic. Then think of another situation when you were not pleased with how someone listened to you. Why is it so difficult to be a good listener?

Scripture Reading: James 1:19-27

Discussion Questions:
  1. How can being quick to listen and slow to speak help us be slow to become angry?
  2. When have you experienced the truth that "man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires?"
  3. Why is there a tendency for Christians to listen to and yet not to follow God's Word? How can you avoid this tendency?
  4. According to verses 26 and 27, how do people who think they are religious differ from those who are truly religious?

After the meeting:

There are many things that distract us from listening effectively. Take some time over the next few days to discover what voices/messages are on your mind. Jot them down. Then ask God to help you deal with those that distract you from him.
